Accidental Acetaminophen Poisonings Rise
Tylenol can seem so harmless, which it's why it's so easy to take more than you really should when you're trying to cope with pain. But who wants liver trouble?
Be sure to check the bottle's dosing instructions.
I almost had a problem with this once after surgery. My son started being concerned about the number of Tylenols I was taking - and sure enough, I was starting to push the limit. Lesson learned.

Hmm, I wonder if gorillas also get PMS? I wouldn't want to mess with a gorilla with a bad case of PMS.

Dark chocolate may cut heart disease risk: study
Now, I like this news story. Yet another thumbs-up for dark chocolate.
"A few squares of dark chocolate every day might cut the risk of serious heart disease by helping to stave off the hardening of arteries..."
I could do that!
Note that there still is that calories issue, although...darn it.
Many Teens Would Flunk Treadmill Tests
About a third of U.S. teens. I knew kids weren't as slim and fit as in the past, but, jeez.
We Americans are really too fat, unfit, and eat too much unhealthy food. We can do better, really we can. (Time to check my own B.M.I.)

Christmas Humor - What If It Had Been 3 Wise WOMEN??
Do you know what would have happened if it had been three Wise
Women instead of three Wise Men ?
Women would say:
They would have asked directions, arrived on time, helped deliver
the baby, cleaned the stable, made a casserole, and brought
practical gifts.
Here's Men's rebuttal.....
Yeah, and do you know what they said would have said when they
left?
"Did you see the sandals Mary was wearing with that gown?"
"That baby doesn't look anything like Joseph!"
"Can you believe they let all of those disgusting animals in the
house?"
"I heard that Joseph isn't even working right now!"
"And that donkey that they are riding has seen better days too!"
"Want to bet on how long it will take until you get your casserole
dish back?"
At the Aquarium on Yahoo! News Photos [Mother & Baby Dolphins]
I like babies. I like dolphins. Maybe you do, too?
I'll never forget the day I went out on a whale watch boat and the ocean was just full of dolphins. They were jumping and playing and following after us like dozens of frisky, friendly puppies glad to see us. After seeing dolphins in tanks all my life it was great to see the dolphins free and wild in their natural environment.

Risky Gift-Giving [A Funny]
HO HO HO or UH OH
A husband was in big trouble when he forgot his
wedding anniversary [Christmas could be substituted - 'tis the Season].
His wife told him "Tomorrow there better be something
in the driveway for me that goes zero to 200 in 2 seconds flat".
The next morning the wife found a small package in the
driveway. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale.
Funeral arrangements for the husband have been set for

Young Adults Admire Boomers - Sometimes
An interesting look at the generations.
Frankly, I'm more disappointed in my Boomer generation than impressed. What happened to the better world we were going to create? I remember as a teenager (1963 - 1969) how we were so critical of our parents' generation for their materialism, conformity, hypocrisy, and lack of idealism. We made fun of their "ticky-tacky" suburban tract houses (which so many of us were lucky enough to be housed in, as I look back on it now). Did we grow up to be better adults than our parents? Overall, probably not. Probably our greatest achievement so far has been in the area of equality - racial and gender. No longer is it necessary to be a white male to matter in our society. No small thing, but we should have done so much more...
From the article above:
"They both love boomers — and love to hate them. They see a talented, successful and outspoken generation that also can be hopelessly dismissive and self-absorbed.
They are awed and sometimes intimidated by baby boomers' accomplishments and a generation so larger-than-life that some of its most famous members are known by only one name — Madonna, Oprah, Bono — or nicknames such as "W" and "The Donald."
But at times, they also see boomers as a bunch of hypocrites who were challenged to "ask what you can do for your country" and ended up focusing on what was in it for them."
That last sentence is definitely an ouch, but, sadly, all too true.
(It's still not too late, Boomers! We can do better. We can still redeem ourselves. Better hurry up, though.)

The Christmas classic that almost wasn't
Good grief, Charlie Brown!
IMO, it's among the better Christmas specials.
Note that the TV ratings for the old chestnut "Rudolph" animation were really quite good this year. I was surprised at how good. These are evergreens.
Enjoy my Christmas section
Something I've been especially excited about of late (I'm just a big old kid, really) is the house with the musical Christmas lights which has been creating buzz around the Web. I have much about this in my Christmas section, of course with links so you can see and hear all about this festive house.
You might want to keep checking back to the Christmas Section, as it's something I keep adding to throughout the Holiday Season.
Enjoy. Happy Holidays!

Alzheimer's Could Be Diabetes-like Illness, Study Suggests
Intriguing, important, and something to watch for further developments. Alzheimer's as a possible Type 3 Diabetes?
Could this mean that it may be possible to control Alzheimer's someday with diet and medicine similar to diabetes treatment? Wouldn't that be wonderful.

Experts: Introverted youth have deep roots for behavior
As one of the deep-thinking (okay, often pondering, day-dreaming, zoning, what have you) introverts mentioned in this article, I'm especially glad to read something in our defense. Our fellow Americans tend to look down on us.
Study - Longer needles needed for fatter buttocks
This headline drew a mix of responses from me: a LOL, followed by alarm and concern, followed by "Gee,that's a good thing to know."
Although, how many women get shots in their butts instead of in their arms?
I can't clearly remember my last "butt shot."
Still, there's no getting away from it, too many Americans are too fat, with butts that are simply too big. Shame on us. Too much fatty, carby food in portions that are too big, along with not enough physical activity.

Happy Thanksgiving & some other stuff(ing?)
Well, sauerkraut may be the next chicken soup, but, whatever... Tomorrow's about turkey. And stuffing. And cranberry sauce. And... Well, you know. Don't we Americans all eat pretty much the same thing on Thanksgiving?
Just the same, the holiday is about something more important than food - it's about counting our blessings and gratitude and giving thanks to God (or whatever or Whomever you wish to call Him).
My biggest thanks this year is for sweet lil grandson Lucas born on March 2. See him at left, almost too darn beautiful to be a boy. He's a pleasant-natured, easy baby - an especially good thing for my daughter Sarah with her three-year-old twins.
I get to see this little sweetheart tomorrow (a busy crawler now), plus a zillion other family members, children, step-grands, and grandchildren, et al., etc... I'm making the stuffing - my stuffing is famous. I am well aware of and very grateful for my many blessings.
You might want to visit the Thanksgiving section on my fun page - The Wazzup Page - on my site. Look at the Wazzup Table of Contents for the link. Find Thanksgiving goodies there.
Have a happy, healthy, safe Thanksgiving! Enjoy, enjoy.

ABC News: Is Sauerkraut the Next Chicken Soup?
This is about reports that sauerkraut and kim chi (a similar Korean fermented cabbage dish) might possibly help fight off avian (bird) flu.
Furthermore, it may also help prevent breast cancer.
This is about the lactic acid in fermented cabbage, in addition to the fact that cabbage, in whatever form, is chockful of vitamins.
Note that cabbage is low in cost. As well as something that can be prepared in many, many ways either cooked or raw.
I have some concern about the saltiness of sauerkraut, excess salt being a negative in regard to high blood pressure (which my husband has) and osteoporosis (which I have). All around, too much salt is not a good thing. The answer, perhaps, which is something I already do: rinse the sauerkraut thoroughly before eating. Just open the can or jar and dump the kraut into a strainer in your sink, then run water through it. (I hope this doesn't wash away the good lactic acid!) Also, to eat sauerkraut in moderation.
But, any way you look at it, cabbage is a good, healthy thing, bird flu or not, kraut or not.
Consider cole slaw or Borscht...yummm...

This is good news for those of us taking tamoxifen for breast cancer prevention. It means that tamoxifen is even more helpful than formerly believed.
Interesting, also, that this article mentions tamoxifen being good for bones, too.

Coffee in pregnancy may be risky: study
Well, sure, if you drink the 8+ cups/day mentioned in this study.
Recommended by experts is 3 cups or less/day.
That plain makes sense.
Consider, also, that too much coffee can be dehydrating. Not good for anyone and, especially, not good for pregnant women and their unborn.
And always drink plenty of water.

US warns sellers of 'alternative' hormone treatments
More hormones in the news.
Yep, if women think that they can handle their osteoporosis with these "alternative" hormone therapies, they had better think again. The FDA agrees.
Get your bone density tests and, if needed, take your Fosamax or other "bone" drug. Beats risking a broken hip, etc. Don't play games with osteoporosis.
Warning Issued for Birth-Control Patch
Women do keep having problems with their intake of hormones. Whether for birth control or for HRT.
Although, admittedly, "The Pill" is great birth control (and I speak from past experience), but, obviously, with definite risks. There still is no easy, really good, answer for birth control
The following is plain scary for me...
"New published studies show that women using the patch absorb about 50 percent more estrogen than with the pill, said Dr. Leslie Miller, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Washington.
When women take the pill, the medication is absorbed into the bloodstream through the digestive tract. In the process, about half of the estrogen dose is lost."
Background to that, I was taking HRT pills, on the advice of my doctor; then, on the advice of my next doctor, started using the HRT patch and was told the patch would be safer because the hormones went straight into the blood, bypassing the digestive tract.
Next chapter, I came down with breast cancer, with a tumor that was, and I quote my pathology report, a "very strong receptor of estrogen." Not merely just "strong", but "very strong." My tumor was nuts for estrogen.
After full cancer treatment I am now taking Tamoxifen, an estrogen-blocker. Which, ironically, means I have less estrogen now than I did prior to HRT.
To repeat myself, in conclusion...
Women do keep having problems with their intake of hormones. Whether for birth control or for HRT.
When are the experts going to get this right?!

Cancer Survivors May Not Get Needed Care
As a breast cancer survivor, I'll vouch for this. And, for the reasons stated in the article. I like the recommendations mentioned.
BTW, while I know it's a good thing for people to be aware of breast cancer, personally I'm rather glad "October Breast Cancer Awareness Month" is over. Believe me, I'm much more aware of breast cancer than I want to be! Moving on...

Osteoporosis screening, therapy is cost effective [If You're Over 50, Get Your Bone Density Test]
I totally believe in the value of women over 50 getting bone density tests.
In fact, I asked about a bone density test when I was (only?) 50 - and it's a darn good thing that I did because I did test to have osteoporosis. I've been on Fosamax since. Thank God I didn't have to break a hip first before I found out about my osteoporosis.
One thing, however, that bugs me about this article, even offends me - it emphasizes cost effectiveness. What about the health and well-being of older women? Isn't that even more important?

It's just sad, somehow.
Anyway, moms and grandmas, here's a heads-up.

Anger is Good For You [Well, within limits!]
This confirms what I've found to be true for myself: I'd much rather be pissed off then surrender to despair.
Anger has an energy and momentum to it; while despair is quite the opposite and can leave you stuck in inertia, drained of the energy and drive to do much of anything to try to make things better.
I'll take anger over depression any day.
However, as the article points out, chronic anger is certanly not a good or healthy thing. Besides being unhealthy, that much anger is just too negative.

House panel votes $844 mln cut in food stamps {And many kids will lose their free meals at school.]
This is wrong, plain wrong. I hope the Senate doesn't pass this.
I've had the unhappy experience of being a food-stamp recipient for a short period in my past. Believe me - it's no give-away. You have to be really broke and without resources to qualify. The three adults in our household only received $300/month total. How fancy can you feed three adults on $300/month? Yes, you wind up eating too many carbs, and get real tired of beans and chunk tuna. This is no give-away, folks. Not in our abundant country.
Quotes from the article:
A new Agriculture Department report found 38.2 million Americans 'were food insecure' in 2004, an increase of nearly 2 million from the previous year. Tufts University food economist Parke Wilde food insecurity 'now equals the worst levels' since recordkeeping began a decade ago.
USDA said 11.9 percent of households, 'at some time during the year, had difficulty providing enough food for all their members due to a lack of resources.'"
North Dakota Democrat Earl Pomeroy complained that 40,000 children would lose free meals at school because of that provision.
"You have not even come clean that kids are going to lose school breakfast and school lunch under this," he said.

Most Americans lack confidence in leaders: poll [with interesting info re women leaders]
Quote from the article:
"The poll also showed that 64 percent believe the country would be better off if more women occupied leadership positions, and perhaps surprisingly more men than women believe this -- 69 percent to 61 percent."
Note that the italics are mine.

Rosa Parks Dead at 92
One of my heroes. A great American hero. It took a lot of courage for this African-American woman "to buck the System." She was taking a great risk, but she went ahead and did the right thing, anyway.
Such a criminal thing to do - to refuse to give up her seat on the bus.
While racism still exists, we certainly have come a long way since that day in 1956.
Perhaps the greatest achievement America has made in the past half-century has been in the area of equal rights. Happily, we no longer live in a world where the only people who really count are white males.
Thank you, Rosa Parks, for your contribution.

U.S. Material Wealth Leads to Clutter
It's simple math - you can't add and add, without subtracting.
I'll confess to having issues with this, although there is the matter of having moved from a house (with 2-car garage) into an apartment with minimal storage... And working from home... And, I could come up with several more good excuses that my children (or me, actually) can't quite buy.
I'm working on it...

Attack of the Gaming Grannies
Ha!
Do you know that complex mental activity is good for your brain? Keeps you young. Use it or lose it! And, games do count!
Anyone ever play "Bloomin' Garden"? (link's on my website - The Wazzup Page - http://www.carolynhmayer.com/wazzup.htm ) "BeJeweled"? "Diner Dash"? (both available online @ http://www.yahoo.com )
I got hooked on games during my cancer treatment - wonderful therapy.
Anyone Sudoku? I, ahem, solved a "Diabolical" the other day.
Starbucks stirs things up with a God quote on cups
From our friends at "Four Bucks"...
Personally, I like the idea of having inspirational quotes on my coffee cups. I can always use a little more inspiration in my day. If the quotes are Christian, fine; if they're not, but from another valuable source, fine.
Food for thought, or rather, drink for thought? Or thought for drink? American need to do far more thinking, IMHO, anyway.
Interesting about the reference in the article to In-N-Out Burger: "...the California-based fast-food chain, has included tiny notations for Bible verses in some of its burger and drink packaging..."
I'll have to look for that. In-N-Out Burger is an unusual fast-food chain in that it pays its workers better, gives benefits - and, not so surprisingly, its employees tend to stick around. So In-N-Out does walk the Christian walk, as well as talking the Christian talk. (BTW, In-N-Out's made-to-order burgers are very good, too - and popular.)

Scientists Study Bone Recovery in Smokers
Just one more reason to not smoke - it's even bad for your bones.
Now, how many millions of reasons are there not to smoke...?
Quitting is hard (dieting is harder, IMO), but I could do it. How about you?
I simply didn't have them - cigarettes - in the house any more. Can't smoke 'em if you don't have 'em. (I wish dieting were as easy - you have to have food around the house...)
Quitting smoking was much easier with my husband quitting at the same time. Living with a smoker would make it so much harder to quit.
Now, to get my husband to go on a diet with me!

Daily Weigh-Ins Help Dieters Lose Pounds
It works for me.
If I"ve gained a pound or two (and I can - even in just one day and not even pigging out!), I'll know I really better cut back, and I'll lose those pounds gained.

Exercise amount more important than intensity
Related to the last posting. This is also good news for this asthmatic who has trouble coping with intensity, but still knows that exercise is a very good thing.
Note also that yoga and tai chi is great exercise that is not intense. This is why this asthmatic took tai chi classes, in fact.
Bottom line: Get moving. Exercise. Stop making excuses.
Exercise can trim deep abdominal fat
So, it's even easier than we thought. Good.
Not to mention important.
Hand me my walking shoes. (Treadmill would count, also, of course.)
Arkansas Mother Gives Birth to 16th Child
My first thought is "Why?!"
And this woman is not done yet.
My second thought is about the money and work aspects of such a large family. I notice that a couple of TV channels seem involved in the childbirth and the family's new - larger! - house. This could explain some funding - for now. As to the work of taking care of such a large family and house: ??!
I like children - but I don't get this.

Jeans lowdown: Waistbands are inching up
I also read about high-waist pants in my L.A. Times this morning.
?!
It's about time - we've spent too many years with underpants - and butt cleavage - showing, worrying if that young person's pants would actually fall off momentarily, or not.
OTOH, this new trend has pants above the waist. Sound uncomfortable, especially for the many not-thin among us.
My idea of a good trend: elastic (or similar) waistbands somewhere close to the waist. Okay, not the sexiest thing in the world, but...whatever...

New SIDS Policy Recommends Pacifiers
Wow, don't the experts go back and forth about the value of pacifiers, whether babies should sleep in the parental bed, whether babies should sleep on back or stomach...
This is the first I've heard of pacifiers possibly preventing SIDS. Although this article points out how it makes sense - it keeps the baby from sleeping too deeply, something which creates risk for SIDS.
Now, all my babies (three) , it turns out wisely, refused to sleep on their stomachs (in spite of my mother-in-law's urgings), one daughter loved her pacifier, my other children refused pacifiers, spitting them out every time. Point being - you can lead babies to anti-SIDS practices, but you can't always make them do what they refuse to do.
Anyway, the closer the experts come to figuring out how to eliminate SIDS altogether, the better.
Merck: Cervical Cancer Vaccine Effective
In case you missed this big story. This is quite an important advance.
The study on the effectiveness of this new cervical cancer vaccine is impressive, also - 100% effective for over 10,000 women. I'm convinced.
Very good news!

Study: Most Will Be Fat Over the Long Haul
I've noticed the older I get, the harder it is to keep my weight down. I really have to work at it; it's a struggle. Quitting smoking was easier. I love cooking, food, eating... But, I also don't want to die before my time!
Oh, for those teenage years when I could eat as much of anything I wanted - and still stay under 100 lbs!

Desperate Housewives - Site and Recap of the First Show of the Season
If you're like me and were busy last Sunday night... I'm sharing this with you. I just had to find out what happened, well, not really, but, you know...
Actor Don Adams of TV's 'Get Smart' Dies
"Would you believe...?"
"Get Smart" was a very funny show - but what else could it be with Mel Brooks and Buck Henry as its writers.
The actors were excellent, too. Don Adams did a great job as the not-so-smart Agent Smart.
Wonderful bit: those billions of doors - big doors, different kinds of doors - that Smart had to enter at the beginning of the show.
Smart's shoe phone precursor to today's cellphone?
Uh, sorry about that...

Good news! and surprising after all this time.
I think we can all excuse him for his housekeeping not being up to standard at this time.
The man said he stayed indoors because he was afraid of it "out there" (my quotes). Can't say I blame him, I can see his point.
He wondered why he wasn't getting his mail...

Check out the "header" graphic to this store
Accordingly, I've added a graphic "Breast Cancer Sucks"
It does.
As for the "sucks" part, yes, that has a double meaning to this mom who breastfed three children, then wound up with breast cancer.
What was the deal with that? Yeah, it sucks(ed).
So, double meaning...
Sucks = stinks
Sucks = what breasts are really all about
(Come on, admit it! That's what God/Nature put them there for. Just like with cows and other female mammals. Mammals, mammary glands, mas, mamas...)
Anyway, get your mammogram and your other gyn/OB exams. It saved my life, maybe it'll save yours. No kidding! Just go, get it done. Every year.
What really, really sucks are the women who DIE from it. Yeah, get your exams, and let's get a cure.

CNN.com - Crawford troopmemorial desecrated
Regardless of what one may think of Cindy Sheehan, regardless of whether one supports the Iraq War or not, regardless of whether one supports Bush or not, this is plain wrong.
1. I don't like seeing crosses run down and broken. It offends me as a Christian.
2. This is, essentially, running down a memorial to our troops killed in Iraq. Spitting in the eyes of their families, spitting in the eyes of our troops still in that hell called Iraq.
I'm really glad the guy got arrested. Ha - he got caught because one of the crosses busted his tire. Somehow appropriate, eh?

5 Back-to-School Styles to Steal From Kids/2005 Fall Fashion
For the most part I like these new Fall styles.
That is, except for what they call "distressed" jeans. Pay that much money for something not even good enough for your rag bag?!
Most of these "new" fashion items I've worn before. Gauchos? Had 'em in the '70s, romantic blouses? The '80s. Still might have one or two - too small now, however (daughters might be interested??), Bohemian? Just another word for the hippy stuff we loved in the mid-'60s to late-'70s (just prior to all that awful polyester, leisure suits, etc.). I'm glad to see Bohemian/Hippy back - I always did like that stuff! How about those long East Indian-style skirts coming back again? (for the third time, but hurray, just the same).

About Women... A couple of nifty quotes
I refuse to believe that trading recipes is silly. Tunafish casserole is at least as real as corporate stock.
~Barbara Grizzuti Harrison
Women are not the weak, frail little flowers that they are advertised. There has never been anything invented yet, including war, that a man would enter into, that a woman wouldn't, too.
~Will Rogers
Whatever women do they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, this is not difficult.

Watch Me Change from Gap - create a virtual you, and then some
This is a kick. Yes, make yourself (or make yourself into whomever you wish, even changing gender), pick out an outfit, then do a dance, strip-tease, and at the end prance out of the dressing room like you're some kind of hot stuff in your new outfit.
Note that the strip tease only goes down to your underwear. This is the Gap store, not a porn site!
Have fun with it.

New study widens pill risks, benefits for cancer
Could have told you so. I'm convinced - as well as my medical people, it seems - that my use of HRT was related to the breast cancer I've had.
From the article...
"...group of 21 scientists elevated the warning on hormonal menopausal therapy to "carcinogenic" from "possibly carcinogenic."
The scientists concluded, based on an expanded study, that "combined menopausal
therapy" increased the risk of breast cancer and in some cases endometrial cancer. "
You know, I'm still wondering if I should join in on this class action lawsuit regarding Prempro I saw advertised in the newspaper. . .? I've been reluctant because I'd rather not get involved with lawyers, as well as recalling the disturbing details of my breast-cancer past.
Anyway, beware of hormone meds, ladies.

What's Good About Being Older
The other day a young person asked me how I felt about being old. I was taken aback, for I do not think of myself as old. Upon seeing my reaction, she was immediately embarrassed, but I explained that it was an interesting question, and I would ponder it, and let her know.
Old Age, I decided, is a gift.
I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over my body ... the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the sagging butt. And often I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror, but I don't agonize over those things for long.
I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged, I've become more kind to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend. I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn't need, but looks so avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to overeat, to be messy, to be extravagant. I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.
Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 a.m, and sleep until noon?
I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 50's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love ... I will.
I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the bikini set.
They, too, will get old.
I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten ... and I eventually remember the important things.
Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when a beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.
I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turn gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver. I can say "no," and mean it. I can say "yes." and mean it.
As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to be wrong.
So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day.
