House panel votes $844 mln cut in food stamps {And many kids will lose their free meals at school.]

House panel votes $844 mln cut in food stamps - Yahoo! News

This is wrong, plain wrong. I hope the Senate doesn't pass this.

I've had the unhappy experience of being a food-stamp recipient for a short period in my past. Believe me - it's no give-away. You have to be really broke and without resources to qualify. The three adults in our household only received $300/month total. How fancy can you feed three adults on $300/month? Yes, you wind up eating too many carbs, and get real tired of beans and chunk tuna. This is no give-away, folks. Not in our abundant country.

Quotes from the article:

A new Agriculture Department report found 38.2 million Americans 'were food insecure' in 2004, an increase of nearly 2 million from the previous year. Tufts University food economist Parke Wilde food insecurity 'now equals the worst levels' since recordkeeping began a decade ago.

USDA said 11.9 percent of households, 'at some time during the year, had difficulty providing enough food for all their members due to a lack of resources.'"

North Dakota Democrat Earl Pomeroy complained that 40,000 children would lose free meals at school because of that provision.

"You have not even come clean that kids are going to lose school breakfast and school lunch under this," he said.

Most Americans lack confidence in leaders: poll [with interesting info re women leaders]

Most Americans lack confidence in leaders: poll - Yahoo! News

Quote from the article:

"The poll also showed that 64 percent believe the country would be better off if more women occupied leadership positions, and perhaps surprisingly more men than women believe this -- 69 percent to 61 percent."

Note that the italics are mine.

Rosa Parks Dead at 92

Rosa Parks Dead at 92 on Yahoo! News Photos

One of my heroes. A great American hero. It took a lot of courage for this African-American woman "to buck the System." She was taking a great risk, but she went ahead and did the right thing, anyway.

Such a criminal thing to do - to refuse to give up her seat on the bus.

While racism still exists, we certainly have come a long way since that day in 1956.

Perhaps the greatest achievement America has made in the past half-century has been in the area of equal rights. Happily, we no longer live in a world where the only people who really count are white males.

Thank you, Rosa Parks, for your contribution.

Cute polar bear photo. Sooo relaxed...

PS: Reality check: This guy could rip our heads off, and might if given the opportunity. So much for cute, eh? But, cute in a PHOTO. At a distance. From a safe place.

U.S. Material Wealth Leads to Clutter

U.S. Material Wealth Leads to Clutter - Yahoo! News

It's simple math - you can't add and add, without subtracting.

I'll confess to having issues with this, although there is the matter of having moved from a house (with 2-car garage) into an apartment with minimal storage... And working from home... And, I could come up with several more good excuses that my children (or me, actually) can't quite buy.

I'm working on it...

Attack of the Gaming Grannies

Attack of the Gaming Grannies - Yahoo! News

Ha!

Do you know that complex mental activity is good for your brain? Keeps you young. Use it or lose it! And, games do count!

Anyone ever play "Bloomin' Garden"? (link's on my website - The Wazzup Page - http://www.carolynhmayer.com/wazzup.htm ) "BeJeweled"? "Diner Dash"? (both available online @ http://www.yahoo.com )

I got hooked on games during my cancer treatment - wonderful therapy.

Anyone Sudoku? I, ahem, solved a "Diabolical" the other day.

Starbucks stirs things up with a God quote on cups

Starbucks stirs things up with a God quote on cups - Yahoo! News

From our friends at "Four Bucks"...

Personally, I like the idea of having inspirational quotes on my coffee cups. I can always use a little more inspiration in my day. If the quotes are Christian, fine; if they're not, but from another valuable source, fine.

Food for thought, or rather, drink for thought? Or thought for drink? American need to do far more thinking, IMHO, anyway.

Interesting about the reference in the article to In-N-Out Burger: "...the California-based fast-food chain, has included tiny notations for Bible verses in some of its burger and drink packaging..."

I'll have to look for that. In-N-Out Burger is an unusual fast-food chain in that it pays its workers better, gives benefits - and, not so surprisingly, its employees tend to stick around. So In-N-Out does walk the Christian walk, as well as talking the Christian talk. (BTW, In-N-Out's made-to-order burgers are very good, too - and popular.)

CNN/Money: Best places to live - 2005

The annual survey.

Also search for your best place by your preferences - good if you're moving, also good for seeing how your hometown stacks up.

My city was a contender. My older daughter's town was #21 in the 100 finalists. (Yorba Linda, CA - where Nixon was born and where his Library is located.)

Frequently, most of the finalists are humble places you never would have guessed were that good a place to live.

Scientists Study Bone Recovery in Smokers

Scientists Study Bone Recovery in Smokers - Yahoo! News

Just one more reason to not smoke - it's even bad for your bones.

Now, how many millions of reasons are there not to smoke...?

Quitting is hard (dieting is harder, IMO), but I could do it. How about you?

I simply didn't have them - cigarettes - in the house any more. Can't smoke 'em if you don't have 'em. (I wish dieting were as easy - you have to have food around the house...)

Quitting smoking was much easier with my husband quitting at the same time. Living with a smoker would make it so much harder to quit.

Now, to get my husband to go on a diet with me!

Exercise amount more important than intensity

Exercise amount more important than intensity - Yahoo! News

Related to the last posting. This is also good news for this asthmatic who has trouble coping with intensity, but still knows that exercise is a very good thing.

Note also that yoga and tai chi is great exercise that is not intense. This is why this asthmatic took tai chi classes, in fact.

Bottom line: Get moving. Exercise. Stop making excuses.

So, it's even easier than we thought. Good.

Not to mention important.

Arkansas Mother Gives Birth to 16th Child

Arkansas Mother Gives Birth to 16th Child - Yahoo! News

My first thought is "Why?!"

And this woman is not done yet.

My second thought is about the money and work aspects of such a large family. I notice that a couple of TV channels seem involved in the childbirth and the family's new - larger! - house. This could explain some funding - for now. As to the work of taking care of such a large family and house: ??!

I like children - but I don't get this.

Jeans lowdown: Waistbands are inching up

Jeans lowdown: Waistbands are inching up - Yahoo! News

I also read about high-waist pants in my L.A. Times this morning.

?!

It's about time - we've spent too many years with underpants - and butt cleavage - showing, worrying if that young person's pants would actually fall off momentarily, or not.

OTOH, this new trend has pants above the waist. Sound uncomfortable, especially for the many not-thin among us.

My idea of a good trend: elastic (or similar) waistbands somewhere close to the waist. Okay, not the sexiest thing in the world, but...whatever...

New SIDS Policy Recommends Pacifiers

New SIDS Policy Recommends Pacifiers - Yahoo! News

Wow, don't the experts go back and forth about the value of pacifiers, whether babies should sleep in the parental bed, whether babies should sleep on back or stomach...

This is the first I've heard of pacifiers possibly preventing SIDS. Although this article points out how it makes sense - it keeps the baby from sleeping too deeply, something which creates risk for SIDS.

Now, all my babies (three) , it turns out wisely, refused to sleep on their stomachs (in spite of my mother-in-law's urgings), one daughter loved her pacifier, my other children refused pacifiers, spitting them out every time. Point being - you can lead babies to anti-SIDS practices, but you can't always make them do what they refuse to do.

Anyway, the closer the experts come to figuring out how to eliminate SIDS altogether, the better.

Merck: Cervical Cancer Vaccine Effective

Merck: Cervical Cancer Vaccine Effective - Yahoo! News

In case you missed this big story. This is quite an important advance.
The study on the effectiveness of this new cervical cancer vaccine is impressive, also - 100% effective for over 10,000 women. I'm convinced.

Very good news!

Study: Most Will Be Fat Over the Long Haul

Study: Most Will Be Fat Over the Long Haul - Yahoo! News

I've noticed the older I get, the harder it is to keep my weight down. I really have to work at it; it's a struggle. Quitting smoking was easier. I love cooking, food, eating... But, I also don't want to die before my time!

Oh, for those teenage years when I could eat as much of anything I wanted - and still stay under 100 lbs!
