New SIDS Policy Recommends Pacifiers

New SIDS Policy Recommends Pacifiers - Yahoo! News

Wow, don't the experts go back and forth about the value of pacifiers, whether babies should sleep in the parental bed, whether babies should sleep on back or stomach...

This is the first I've heard of pacifiers possibly preventing SIDS. Although this article points out how it makes sense - it keeps the baby from sleeping too deeply, something which creates risk for SIDS.

Now, all my babies (three) , it turns out wisely, refused to sleep on their stomachs (in spite of my mother-in-law's urgings), one daughter loved her pacifier, my other children refused pacifiers, spitting them out every time. Point being - you can lead babies to anti-SIDS practices, but you can't always make them do what they refuse to do.

Anyway, the closer the experts come to figuring out how to eliminate SIDS altogether, the better.
